Summary
In the project, a 5 MP Camera System is implemented using a CMOS image sensor, an FPGA board and a PC connected to FPGA via USB 3.0/2.0. The product includes autofocus, panning, zoom. During zooming in, the system displays only the zoomed-in area all the while keeping overall screen resolution constant. To achieve that, a configurable CMOS camera module that can target and scale a region of interest (zoomed-in area) to the intended resolution of data transfer is used. The product also features a PC interface that includes user-configurable settings and gives output of 1080p resolution real-time video with 30 FPS. To achieve high FPS for high resolution we have implemented a USB 3.0 link between FPGA and PC. However, as requested, the project is also USB 2.0 compatible for lower resolution outputs. A preliminary product with a lower resolution camera module (OV7670) and a simpler FPGA board (Nexys2) is finalized with UART communication between FPGA and PC. Afterwards, the camera module is changed to a high resolution one (5MP OV5642) and the FPGA to one with USB transmission capabilities (Opal Kelly XEM6310-LX45). Consequently, a video streaming system using QQVGA resolution via UART connection at about 7 FPS will be upgraded to video streaming at 1080p resolution via USB3.0 connection at about 30 FPS in the final product.
