Summary
The main target of our project is to detect unexpected conditions that could be dangerous in mines instantaneously or even before they take place by designing appropriate sensor system utilizing temperature and gas sensors and also to determine the approximate locations of mine workers inside the mines with Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). So, beside pre-warning mechanism in mines this project also enables smart evacuation applications for mines. The project consists of three main stages: Firstly, a software simulation program is developed and DSR (Dynamic Source Routing) protocol is implemented in this environment. For several risk scenarios, unit tests are performed in the simulation. Then, the hardware of the system is designed which consists of gateway and nodes. Gateway collects and controls the data received from nodes. Nodes are located on the walls of mines and helmets of miners. Lastly, the control application evaluates the system and if there is a serious change in temperature or release of gas in the mine, then the application would generate warning messages immediately and enable workers to take timely precautions. Through the model map of the mine, it also provides real-time locations of each miner.
