Summary
Within the context of the project, the underwater data transfer system that enables one hydrophone and one projector communicate with each other by utilizing acoustic waves is designed. The purpose of the project is to transfer the determined data up to 20 meters range with the speed of 100 bit/second via acoustic waves between two stable points by having less than 10-3 bit error rate in the underwater environment. The project consists of two main parts: transmission and reception parts. The input is the digital data taken from the keyboard and the output is a visual and voice data shown in the screen and broadcasted by the speaker in order. In the transmission part; the power amplifier and the power supply have been designed to boost current and supply voltage, respectively. Moreover, Binary Frequency Shift Keying (BFSK) Modulation, Convolutional Encoding and Time Synchronization algorithms have been implemented. In the reception part; the receiver amplifier and the power supply have been designed to boost voltage, filter signal and supply voltage. Moreover, Envelope Detector Demodulation Techniques, Viterbi Decoding and Time Synchronization algorithms have been implemented. These two parts have been boxed separately. Having implemented components of the project, the underwater modem (SUMO) is tested first in the laboratory environment by designing attenuation circuit that labels the underwater environment, second at the pool in Aselsan through using hydrophone and projector and last in the METU Lake utilizing these transducers.
