Aykut Koç Promoted to Associate Professor

EEE Faculty member Dr. Aykut Koç has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University is proud to announce the promotion of Dr. Aykut Koç to the position of Associate Professor, effective November 2025.

Dr. Aykut Koç is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and in the National Magnetic Resonance Research Center (UMRAM) at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey.

Dr. Koç received a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2005, an M.S. degree in electrical engineering in 2007, an M.S. degree in management science and engineering in 2009, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2011, all from Stanford University, Stanford, CA.

His research interests are in the intersection of signal processing and machine learning to develop novel machine learning methods with applications extending to natural language processing (NLP) by merging them with signal processing approaches, especially from graph signal processing (GSP), which is developed to study complicated structures of large networks, such as social and economic networks, energy and transportation grids, sensor networks, and epidemiology and gene regulatory networks.

Dr. Koç has also made significant theoretical contributions to signal processing and GSP, focusing on the ongoing wave of generalizations from signal processing and neural networks to the GSP and graph neural networks (GNNs).

The findings of his research were published in leading venues such as IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (IEEE-TSP), IEEE Signal Processing Letters (IEEE-SPS), IEEE Transaction on Signal and information Processing over Networks (IEEE-TSIPN), IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence (IEEE-TAI), IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing (IEEE/ACM-TASLP), as well as the Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL).

He has authored or co-authored more than 90 research papers, one book chapter, and issued five patents. His academic work has received over 2,000 citations. One of Dr. Koç’s articles was among the IEEE Signal Processing Society (IEEE-SPS)’s Top 25 downloaded articles worldwide from Sept. 2022 – Sept. 2023.

Dr. Koç is a Senior Member of IEEE, and currently serves as an Associate Editor of IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information Processing over Networks, and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He is also Chair of IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS)’s Türkiye Chapter.

Dr. Koç is the recipient of the 2023 Science Academy Young Scientists Award (BAGEP).
